A working group on strengthening Forest Law Enforcement, Governance and Trade (FLEGT) has been established in Vietnam to assist in forest management.
News Bernama Friday said this working group was established in cooperation between Ministry of Agricultural and Rural Development of Vietnam (MARD) and the European Commission with the focus mission on skills training for businesses in the procurement responsible forest products, procedures for FSC certification by the Forest Stewardship Council, establishing updated information system on FLEGT and trade monitoring system of timber and forest products .
In the years before Vietnam is the leading country in Southeast Asia in the implementation of FSC, but Vietnam has recently slowed down a lot compared to other countries in the region. This affects the psychology of buyers of forest products in Vietnam.
Ideas from Mr. Nguyen Ngoc Binh, Director Forestry Deparment (MARD), the awareness, knowledge and SOP in FLEGT and FSC system is one of the highest priority of Vietnam's agriculture.
Speaking at the launching ceremony in Hanoi FLEGT group, Ambassador of the European Commissioner in Vietnam, said Sean Doyle, noted that Vietnam is one of the ten largest furniture exporter in the world.
He said that Vietnam's voluntary participation FLEGT legislation implemented by the European Commission proposed furniture will help Vietnam develop stronger markets in Europe and the world.
In 2009, export turnover of Vietnam's wood furniture reached 2.25 billion, down 9.9% from the previous year.
