Vegetation of sand areas not only supplies forestry products, food and medicine but also plays an important role in forming protective forest along the coast, improving and stabilizing local climate, reducing shifting sand and making a good condition for agriculture. The investigation into vegetation diversity was carried out to establish the scientific basic for the green cover conservation and development on sand regions in Phong Dien district, Thua Thien Hue province. A total number of identified 320 vascular plant species distributed in a variety of habitats on different sand regions including unstable sand, dry stable sand and humid sand. The vegetation cover here could be separated into 10 types based on characteristics of sand areas and vegetation on it. Each vegetation type has specific plant community. We must pay good attention to evergreen tropical forests with rather high diversity. It has taken a long time to form these forest types on sand, hence, we should have conservation programs as soon as possible to sustain the remaining valuable vegetation.
