Last modified on 20/11/2010 at 10:54:00 AM. Total 2353 views.

The family Urticaceae consists of about 100 species in 21 genera in Vietnam. Many species of the family have been evaluated as very useful plants. Among them, 35 species are used as medicinal plants, 3 species as fiber plants, 1 species as ornamental plant, 1 species as timber tree, 5 species are eaten as vegetables, etc. Many species of the family are connected closely to the life demand and play important role in community and economic development. In particular, Boehmeria nivea (L.) Gaudich. is a valuable species in economy and has been used in many countries for fiber and for making traditional food. Research on the taxonomy and development of this family for Vietnamese economy in the future is urgently needed.
