A lecturer at the University of Agriculture and Forestry of Hue province has created a vertical hanging garden which is more space-saving than conventional landscape gardens.

"In urban areas there are often empty areas as a balcony, front yard,... Therefore, if the appropriate tools could be designed, they could help families take advantage of this areas for growing clean vegetables for family meals or cultivation of plants to cater to the entertainment", said Nguyen Van Quy during talk of sharing the idea of making his subject.

Since then, he has been researching and designing the hanging-gardens kits, which can be placed at any location in the balconies, terraces for growing vegetables or ornamentals.

The author said with the hanging garden kits, just 5m2 space can even plant hundreds of root vegetables or other plants.

Growing vegetables by this kit also contributes to reduce the risk of environmental pollution in agriculture, or construction of farm vegetables on the sandy, desert, wetlands, salinization, contamination alum, or the islands.

The kit consists of four parts: distributor and recovery of nutrients part, planting components, fixing frame module and irrigation control time module. It works by circulating hydroponic method, and is hung vertically in space.

Growers planted just spread out the carpet, use the hook then hang to the frame, then connect the clock, water tanks and irrigation system altogether. Next is to use a little coconut husk acne hun or pocket and sowing or planting trees on it. By the time set, the clock will supply electricity to operate pumps to pump water and nutrients to the upper garden.

"The system works completely automated, so no labor cost, efficient use of labor and time. Product is completely raw and pure by not using plant protection drugs," Quy said.

The study by Nguyen Van Quy received the award for Environmental Excellence awarded by the British Council.
