The Euphorbiaceae is one of the largest and most diverse families in the flora of Vietnam. It comprises about 75 genera, 450 species and 16 varieties, of which 131 species and 16 varieties are endemic. Previous phytochemical investigations on Euphorbiaceae species resulted in isolation of flavonoids, triterpenoids, diterpenoids, diterpene esters, phorbol diterpenes derivatives, alkaloids and tannins, etc. The numerous pharmacological tests showed many interesting properties of extracts from Euphorbiaceae species, e.g. anti-HIV, antitumor, cytotoxic, antifungal, antibacterial, antiviral, antioxidant and insecticidal activities. As lead compounds they may have potential in research and development of future medicines.
